Life is crazy with one child, but life with four kids and a Red Heeler is over-the-top insanity! And I LOVE it. Well, most of it… some of it is downright terrifying, but if we can’t laugh about the pitfalls in our lives and celebrate the victories, where’s the fun in that?
My name is Jessica, and I’m the mother of four fantastic kids, known collectively as “The Herd”: Two boys, ages 9 and 7, and two girls, ages 6 and 4. The Herd attend a small private country school where the mascot is a colt that gets ridden down the field before football games and high school kids might be late for school if they went turkey-hunting that morning. They are still allowed to have a morning prayer and say the pledge with gusto, and we wouldn’t trade it for the world, so snapshots of their school experiences appear on all of my social networks, which my readers love.
My college sweetheart (now my husband of a decade) and I are raising our kids on an 80 acre ranch in rural Alabama, where they are learning about the REAL pleasures in life. Hunting, fishing, playing in the mud, working on the garden, learning how to REALLY cook and can food in my kitchen, helping neighbors with their cattle… that’s the good stuff they’re being raised on and the things I LOVE to write about. Along with the pictures I post on Instagram and Facebook, my blog posts tell a story of being raised in the rural South on a budget!
Even though I’m a lifelong Alabamian, I grew up in-town for the most part, so parts of the country lifestyle are new to me and I’m learning as I go along with my children. Writing about the things I’ve learned and conquered (like learning to shoot a shotgun and finally hitting a dove) make me super happy and hopefully my readers will be inspired to give new things a try. It’s fun, I swear!
Being the caregiver, referee, encourager and warden to a houseful of wild and crazy kids living in the country can be exhausting, but it’s worth it. Even when I find things like chocolate pudding splattered all over the walls or argue with them until I’m lying in a frustrated heap of confusion, surrounded by candy wrappers (cheaper than therapy), or cleaning mud out of Elsa princess shoes because one of the girls went fishing in them, I still wouldn’t trade it. And a lot of it’s hilarious, so I write about it!
Therapy for me, hilarious stories for you… everyone wins.
